My Top 5 Running Songs

Image

Me during the Mdina 2 Spinola race from last December. It was my first 17.4km ever, my longest distance before then had only been 13.4km, which is far from optimal. Regardless, I had TONS of fun running that race, as you can probably tell from the picture.

Here’s another one of my irregular blog posts, each lacking a clear link or pattern to the other. This afternoon I tried out my first ever tempo run. Essentially, this means challenging yourself to run faster, at a ‘comfortably hard’ level of effort, for a certain time, then allowing yourself a short easier paced portion, and another round of the ‘comfortably hard’ effort.

Somewhere near the end of my run today, a song came on which inspired me to put together this list… as did Claire’s post from a few weeks ago which featured female pop power songs (I really should add Roar and Wrecking Ball to my running playlist pronto!).

On the 31st December, I decided to sign up for the Malta Marathon (the half, of course!), so I’ll be listening to these a fair bit while preparing and training for that in the coming 6 and a half (only!) weeks. Without further ado:

  1. What’s My Age Again? by blink-182 – nothing powers me through more than this fun fun song does! It’s not the first time I find myself singing along to random words in the funny lyrics as I run around the neighbourhood. What’s more, jog.fm says its perfect for a 5:47/km pace, which is pretty much my current target pace. LOVE IT.
  2. Bam Bam by King Charles – I LOVE THIS GUY. His songs are such motivators. It’s another song which makes me sing out (sing/shout out?!) random occasional words as I run along. Honourable mentions are his Lady Percy (discovered and fell in love with this guy’s music because of this song) and Love Lust (this one is fast. That’s why I need it!).
  3. Misery Business by Paramore – kickass powersong. Need I say more?
  4. Demons by Imagine Dragons – You wouldn’t think it, but this song comes in at 180BPM (perfect for a 4:21/km, according to jog.fm again). I’m kind of biased for putting in some Imagine Dragons since I saw them in London last November, but there you go! My playlist also features my current absolute favourite by them, Amsterdam
  5. Planetary (Go!) by My Chemical Romance – No list from me would be complete without some MCR thrown in, now, would it? Here’s my favourite running song from them. With lyrics like “”If my velocity starts to sweat, then just don’t let go”, “just get up and go!” and “I can’t slow down, I wont be waiting for you/I can’t stop now, because I’m dancing”, Planetary (Go!) really does earn its place in my running playlist top 5.

Keep running! Or if you’re considering running but are hesitant…start running!
